Law #14: Attributes — For every attribute, there is an opposite, effective attribute
(From The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing)

Most businesses think differentiation means improvement.

So they look at the leader and try to match them—then add a little more.

Better features.
Better service.
Better results.

But the problem is…

you’re still playing the same game.

The Trap of Shared Attributes

If the leader is known for something, that position is already taken.

And trying to claim the same attribute—even if you do it better—rarely works.

Because in the customer’s mind:

They already assigned that idea to someone else.

So instead of replacing the leader…

you reinforce them.

The Strategic Shift

Every strong attribute has an opposite.

And that opposite is where opportunity lives.

If someone owns:

Speed → you can own depth
Premium → you can own accessibility
Complex → you can own simplicity
Corporate → you can own personal

Not as a reaction.

As a position.

Why This Works

People don’t choose between identical options.

They choose between differences.

And opposites create clarity.

They make the decision easier.

Because instead of asking:

“Which is better?”

The customer asks:

“Which one fits me?”

What This Looks Like in Practice

Instead of saying:

“We’re just as fast—but better”

You say:

“We take the time others don’t”

Instead of:

“We offer everything they do”

You say:

“We focus on what matters most”

This isn’t about being contrary.

It’s about being clear.

The Discipline Required

Choosing the opposite takes confidence.

Because it means you won’t appeal to everyone.

Some people will prefer the leader.

That’s expected.

You’re not trying to win everyone.

You’re trying to be the obvious choice for the right ones.

The Reality That Changes Everything

You don’t win by competing on the same strengths.

You win by defining a different strength.

Because the moment your attribute is clearly distinct…

you stop being compared.

You start being chosen.

And in a crowded market, that shift is everything.
