Law #9: Opposite — If you are shooting for second place, your strategy is determined by the leader
(From The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing)
Most businesses try to beat the leader by becoming a better version of them.
Better features.
Better service.
Better experience.
It sounds smart.
But it creates a problem.
The more you resemble the leader…
the more you reinforce them.
The Trap of Imitation
When you position yourself as “just like them, but better,” you’re asking people to rethink what they already believe.
And that rarely happens.
Because the leader already owns the primary position.
They’re the default.
The reference point.
The standard.
So when you copy their strengths, you don’t look stronger.
You look secondary.
The Strategic Shift
If you’re not first, your job isn’t to compete head-on.
It’s to position against.
Not aggressively—but clearly.
You don’t challenge the leader on what they’re known for.
You define yourself by what they are not.
What This Looks Like in Practice
If the leader is:
Corporate → you become personal
Complex → you become simple
Premium → you become accessible
Traditional → you become modern
Not randomly.
Deliberately.
Because customers don’t choose between identical options.
They choose between contrasts.
Why This Works
People already understand the leader.
That means you don’t need to explain the category.
You just need to position yourself in relation to it.
You become the alternative.
The clear second choice—not a weaker version of the first.
And in a two-player market, that’s powerful.
The Discipline Required
This takes restraint.
You have to stop trying to prove you’re better on their terms.
Stop chasing their strengths.
Stop copying their language.
Stop trying to win their game.
Because their game is already designed for them to win.
Instead, you define a different angle.
One that makes sense immediately.
One that feels distinct.
One that gives people a real reason to choose you.
If you’re second and still acting like the leader…
you’re invisible.
But if you’re second and clearly different…
you become the only real alternative.
