Law #1: Leadership — It’s better to be first than better
(From The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing)
Most people build like they’re entering a fair competition.
They assume customers will compare options, evaluate quality, and choose the best one.
That’s not how decisions actually happen.
People don’t search for the best.
They remember the first.
The first brand in a category becomes the reference point. It defines expectations. It sets the standard others are judged against.
And once that position is taken, it’s incredibly difficult to dislodge.
The Trap of “Better”
Trying to be better sounds logical.
So businesses add features. Improve performance. Refine the offer.
But here’s the problem:
“Better” requires comparison.
And most people don’t spend time comparing.
They default.
They go with what they’ve heard of first. What feels familiar. What already exists in their mind.
Which means if you’re second, third, or tenth—being better isn’t enough to matter.
The Real Strategy
If you can be first, do it.
Not first to build something…
First to own something.
First in a category.
First in a niche.
First in a specific idea.
And if the category already exists?
Don’t compete inside it.
Create a new one.
Because being first in a small category beats being invisible in a large one.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Instead of entering crowded markets:
- Don’t build another platform
- Don’t offer a “better version”
- Don’t chase feature parity
Instead:
Define a space so clear and specific that you arrive first by design.
Not:
“A networking group”
But:
“A referral-first network built for trusted relationships”
Clarity creates leadership.
The Reality Most Ignore
You don’t need to be the best.
You need to be the one people think of first.
Because in the mind of the customer,
first = best.
Whether it’s true or not.
If you’re not first in something… what exactly are you first remembered for?
