Many conversations begin with a simple question:

“What’s not working?”

In coaching, leadership, and even personal reflection, our attention often goes straight to the problems. We analyze obstacles, frustrations, and gaps between where we are and where we want to be.

But powerful coaching often begins somewhere else entirely.

It begins with what’s working.

Recognizing wins—no matter how small—does more than make people feel good. It reinforces progress. It builds confidence. And perhaps most importantly, it shifts attention toward evidence that change is already happening.

Momentum rarely starts with perfection.
It starts with progress.

When people pause long enough to acknowledge what is going right, something subtle begins to shift. The brain starts to see forward movement instead of constant struggle.

That shift matters.

Because when progress becomes visible, effort increases naturally. Clients become more engaged. Energy rises. Possibility expands.

Ignoring wins has the opposite effect. When progress goes unnoticed, people assume nothing is improving—even when it is.

Over time, that belief can quietly erode motivation.

Celebrating wins interrupts that pattern.

It reminds people that growth is already underway. It helps them see that their actions are producing results, even if the final outcome hasn’t arrived yet.

In coaching conversations, a simple question can unlock this shift:

“What’s working right now?”

That question invites reflection, perspective, and encouragement. It moves attention from problems to progress.

And once progress becomes visible, momentum follows.

Because people naturally invest more effort in something they can see improving.
